Buying a new townhouse in Melbourne
Townhouses are a big part of Melbourne’s new-home market. Most new projects sit in the established middle-ring suburbs, where an older house on a large block is replaced by a small group of two- and three-storey homes, and in the western and northern growth areas, where bigger communities mix townhouses with houses and apartments.
Three-bedroom layouts with a courtyard or balcony and one or two car spaces are the norm, and four-bedroom homes are common in the family suburbs to the east. Prices swing widely from suburb to suburb, so compare the price-from figures here with recent sales nearby before you commit.
In Victoria, shared areas in a townhouse complex are managed by an owners corporation. Ask for the proposed budget and fees before you sign.
